İstanbul Welcomes International Puppet Companies For 18th Festival
On Tuesday, İstanbul welcomed the 18th edition of its annual puppet festival, which is offering dozens of performances by an international selection of marionette performers in various venues across the city for the next two weeks. Traditional and modern productions from more than 10 countries, including France, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Italy, Spain, Russia and Chile, as well as Turkey, are being staged in the festival, which continues until Oct. 25.

The festival will mark its official opening on Wednesday evening at the French Cultural Center with a special presentation of French company La Pendue's “Poli Degaine,” a glove puppet performance based on the traditional clown/marionette character Polichinelle, or Pulcinella, in Italian. The show, performed in English, will also be staged on Oct. 15 at the same venue.

Other groups and artists on the festival's lineup include the Taiyuan Puppet Theatre Company from Taiwan, the Dutch company Theater Tique, Spain's Rocamora Teatro and Bambalina Teatro and Italian puppet artist Claudio Cinelli. In addition to marionette shows, the program also features puppet workshops and film screenings.

The program was put together by Turkish shadow theater artist Cengiz Özek, who is the festival's artistic director. Traditional Turkish Karagöz shows are also on the bill. Venues include the Akbank Art Center in Taksim, the Sahne Pulchérie theater inside Lycée Sainte Pulchérie in Beyoğlu, as well as the shopping malls Forum İstanbul, Marmara Forum, Torium and Mall of İstanbul.
